Statins

Post by siby » Fri Feb 20, 2009 9:18 am

Statins are recently found to reduce mortality from all causes. Are they wonder drugs? Which statins are popular in Kerala?
Any experts on this topic? 8)

What you are talking about is Rosuvastatin,Siby, yes its a wonder drug after the recent Jupiter trial (Even patients without hyperlipidemia who were receiving rosuvastatin had significantly fewer cardiovascular events than did patients receiving placebo) and in our practice too we are shifting from atorvastatin to rosuvastatin. read more here.. http://www.nejm.org/clinical-directions ... ins-trial/ and here http://www.cardiosource.com/rapidnewssu ... ?SumID=318

Isn't it then a drug to be administered routinely to everybody above a certain age or people with specific risk factors?
But how can we know if it has got any long term side effects? How can we be sure that it doesn't induce, say a cancer, with 10 - 15 years use?

Speaking about statins, there is a ongoing trial for use of statins in subarachnoid hemorrhage and their role in prevention of vasospasm following SAH. Again within the cardiac field, statins were proven to have a role in maintaining grafts in the immediate postop period after a CABG...so yes they seem to coming out with so many roles for statins these days. Though I would still take it with a pinch of salt.....wait till the Patents run out and the long term trial results start to come out ...lot of drugs had to be withdrawn or their prescriptions modified on the basis of long term trials.
